The city Chanderi from Madhya Pradesh lends this art its name. Though it
dates back to the 13th century and is referenced several times in mythology, it has
managed to have a place in modern-day fashion in India, being used by top designers and adorned by well-known celebrities.

It is woven using handspun cotton warps and wefts. The transparency, shimmery texture and luxuriously elegant feel of the Chanderi fabric has earned it the name ‘woven air’. Chanderi is characterised by traditional motifs or buttas of flowers, animals, peacocks, lotus, coins, celestial figures and many others, embellished on to the borders and pallus using zari, golden and copper threads. Most well-known among the cluster of handlooms in India, Chanderi is one of the must-haves in your saree collection.
